How are fire extinguishers used?

Each fire extinguisher is designed to extinguish a fire in a specific way. Some remove the oxygen from the area, some remove the heat, others smother the fuel and separate it from sources of ignition. All fire extinguishers extinguish fire through one or more of the above methods.
